Hi – just reading in a magazine about the bird count. Then looked it up as it would be an incredible thing for our family to participate in – but I note it is no longer running. Could you please let me know what has changed?

    Regards

      Hi Melissa,

Thanks for the message and sorry for the delay in replying (we’ve been offline for awhile). We no longer hold the annual Gouldian finch count simply because we have expanded our work over such a wide area now that we can no longer effectively use volunteers to census the birds manually. Instead, and excitingly, we are now using recent developments in satellite tracking, whereby birds will fitted with tiny sensors that record all their movements. Although this is unfortunate for many of the people who have joined us from around the world to help with our counting over the years, this new technology means that we are getting much more relaible and thorough data on the numbers and movements of these birds. Hope this answers your question!
