One of our helpers checking one of the thousands of nest-boxes that are up for the Gouldians. It’s hard work in very hot and humid conditions but finding a Gouldian nest is always such a wonderful reward!

My name is Matthew and I am a animal lover and concerned about all animals. One of my favorite is the Gouldian.I am happy you have found out what was wrong but I reckon its the aborigines collecting hollow tree branches for didgeridoos. They have to get them from some place so it would be great if you could check if they get them from those places then you could work some deal with them and tell them how important it is.
I also reckon that you should not use hollow branches because you then create a problem by taking an animals home away so they should be hand made and that would out well for all.
Thanks for dedicating your money and time on such an important thing.
Keep up the good work.
All the best Matthew.
Hi Matthew,
Thanks for the message. We agree – hollows are vital for many animals and should never be removed from the natural environment. The tree hollows are not removed from trees in the areas where we work (definitely only fire damage). Unfortunately, Gouldians won’t use artificial entrances into their nest-boxes (only like natural wood) but to make our nest-boxes we only use hollow branches taken from land-cleared areas (i.e. areas have been cleared for development and the trees have been removed from the environment). By doing this we can put these hollows back into the environment and to a very good use.
All the best,
STGF
